Transmog can be disabled at an NPC; Classic Mode hides it automatically. You still collect appearances while it is off. Grey and white items unlock appearances when looted. Higher-level appearances remain restricted until level 60, when level limits disappear but item-type rules remain. Hidden helms and cloaks stay hidden even with transmog disabled. Cross-version collections have not been established.
